Guitars for Vets is a non-profit national organization that provides free music instruction and guitars to injured veterans. Each rotation of Missouri's chapter meets at the Truman Veterans' Hospital in Columbia, Missouri on a weekly basis for ten weeks. Chris Longdon, the Missouri Chapter Liaison and Coordinator for the local chapter of Guitars for Vets, brought the program to the veterans hospital in 2016, where he is a Peer Support Specialist. Longdon says that the program has helped many veterans in the last year because the program is approaching recovery of PTSD and other illnesses in a different way. "It's based around the guitar, so people who might be uncomfortable in traditional settings can get a lot of benefit from coming to learn to play the guitar and learning a new coping skill," Longdon says.
